The Rott recordings by Samuel, Segerstam, and
now Weigle offer considerable pleasure. But - the Norrköping
orchestra's stunning work notwithstanding - I'd still like
to hear this music played by a world-class ensemble (in London
or Amsterdam, Cleveland or possibly Boston) that could take
its formidable technical difficulties in stride, under the
guidance of an experienced senior conductor. (One could imagine
Mehta in particular having a great time with the piece; Abbado,
Haitink, Masur, or even Boulez would have worthwhile insights
as well.) Such a performance, when it arrives, will be well
worth the wait. |
